A windshield chip repair in the U.S. typically costs between $50 and $150, according to AAA’s windshield cost guide. A full replacement runs from $250 to well over $1,000. At AutoRenu 911, a chip or crack repair is $125, and we do it at your home or workplace in Walnut Creek, Oakley and the surrounding East Bay. With the right insurance coverage, many drivers pay nothing.

The gap between a chip repair and a replacement is the whole story. Fix a chip while it is small and you spend a fraction of the cost. Wait until it spreads across the glass and the bill multiplies. This guide covers the real price ranges, what moves the number, when a chip is too big to repair, and how insurance changes the math.

TL;DR

  • Expect $50 to $150 for a chip repair nationally. Our price is $125 per repair, performed on site.
  • Replacement costs far more: roughly $250 to $1,500 or more, and more again if your car has a camera that needs recalibration.
  • Many insurers reduce or waive the deductible for chip repair, so it is often $0 out of pocket. Check your own policy.
  • A chip about the size of a quarter or smaller is usually repairable. Act before dirt, moisture and temperature swings turn it into a crack.
  • Chips in the driver’s line of sight or at the glass edge may need replacement, no matter how small.

What a windshield chip repair costs

Prices vary by source, because they depend on the region, the damage and how the work is delivered. Here is what major U.S. references say.

Source Chip or small crack repair Full replacement
AAA $50 to $150 (chip $60 to $100, crack $100 to $150) $250 to $1,500 or more
Allstate, citing Consumers’ Checkbook $60 to $90 for small repairs $800 to $1,000 depending on make and model
AutoRenu 911 $125 for chip and crack repair Quoted per vehicle

The figures come from AAA and Allstate. Treat them as ranges, not quotes. A repair on a luxury vehicle in a high-cost metro area will not price like a repair on a base sedan in a small town.

You may also see lower advertised prices for a chip repair, often with a fee for each extra chip. Those low numbers usually assume a simple, fresh chip, and the work done at a shop. Ask what the price includes before you compare.

What a windshield chip repair costs

What affects the price to fix a chip

Two chips that look alike from the driver’s seat can cost different amounts. These are the factors that decide it.

Size and type of damage

A small bullseye is the simplest repair. Star breaks and combination breaks have more legs for resin to fill, so they take longer. A short crack costs more to repair than a chip. AAA’s ranges reflect this: chips fall in the lower band and cracks in the higher one.

How many chips

More than one chip on the same windshield adds time and resin. Some providers charge per additional repair, others quote the job as a whole. If you have two or three small chips from the same stretch of freeway, tell us up front so the quote is accurate.

How long you waited

A fresh chip is clean. An old one has collected road grime, wiper residue and moisture. Contamination makes it harder for the resin to bond and for the repair to look clear. The industry repair standard lists contamination with visible impurities as a reason that replacement is recommended instead.

Where the damage sits

Location matters as much as size. Damage at the edge of the glass, or in the driver’s primary viewing area, can push a job from repair to replacement. More on that below.

Where the work happens

A shop visit means you take time off and drive with the damage. Mobile service comes to you. Some providers add a travel or service-call fee. Our $125 price is for a mobile repair at your location, with no separate trip charge mentioned in our published price.

Your vehicle’s technology

Chip repair does not disturb the camera behind the mirror, so it normally avoids the calibration step. Replacement is different. If the glass has to come out, a car with driver-assist features needs its camera recalibrated afterward, which raises the bill. That is a strong reason to repair early.

When a chip can be repaired and when it can’t

The repair standard most of the glass industry follows is ANSI AGSC ROLAGS 002-2022. It sets repairable limits of:

  • Bullseye: up to 1 inch (25 mm) across
  • Half moon: up to 1 inch
  • Star break: up to 3 inches (75 mm)
  • Combination break: up to 2 inches (50 mm)
  • Crack: up to 14 inches (350 mm)

The same standard recommends replacement when the damage goes through both layers of the glass, when there are three or more long cracks from one impact point, when the plastic interlayer is damaged, or when the damage is contaminated. In the driver’s primary viewing area, replacement is recommended if the damage is larger than 1 inch or the finished repair pit will exceed 3/16 inch (5 mm).

Insurers give simpler rules of thumb:

  • AAA says a chip or crack smaller than a quarter is usually repairable, while deep cracks over three inches, cracks near the edges and damage in the camera zone often need replacement.
  • Allstate says replacement is usually the better call when the crack is longer than a dollar bill, the damage runs more than halfway through the glass, or it reaches the edge.
  • California Casualty says damage of 6 inches or less that does not reach the edge and is not in your line of vision qualifies for repair.
  • USAA says a technician can generally repair three or fewer chips smaller than 6 inches, and suggests replacement for four or more chips or cracks, or damage larger than 6 inches.

The rules differ a little, so the practical test is simple. If you can cover the damage with a quarter, it is almost certainly worth a repair call. If it is bigger, or sits in front of your eyes, send us a photo and we will tell you which side of the line it falls on. Our crack size chart and our repair versus replacement guide show the same thresholds with pictures.

California has its own safety rule on top of this. Under Vehicle Code Section 26710, it is unlawful to drive with a windshield in a condition that impairs the driver’s vision. A large crack across your view is not just a cost problem.

When a chip can be repaired and when it can't

Chip repair versus replacement: the real cost gap

Take a typical example. You pick up a quarter-size chip on the I-680 near Walnut Creek.

  • Repair now: about $125 with us, or $0 with qualifying coverage.
  • Wait a few weeks: a hot afternoon and a cold night later, the chip becomes a 10-inch crack. Replacement is now the only option.
  • Replacement: from several hundred dollars to $1,500 or more depending on the vehicle, plus camera recalibration if your car needs it.

A repair also keeps the original factory seal around the glass. It takes about 20 minutes, and you are driving again right away, as our chip repair page explains.

If you are weighing a DIY kit, we cover the tradeoffs in our DIY versus professional chip repair article.

How insurance changes what you pay

Many drivers never see the $125. Whether your policy pays depends on your coverage, but the pattern across major insurers is consistent.

  • Farmers says comprehensive or glass coverage may apply to covered windshield damage, and that chip repair may carry a reduced or no deductible, while replacement may require the applicable deductible.
  • Progressive says that under comprehensive coverage it does not apply a deductible to repairs, while a replacement can. Its example: on an $800 replacement with a $100 deductible, you pay $100.
  • GEICO says that when the appropriate coverage applies, it waives the deductible for glass repair. It also notes that your policy contract controls.

Your own policy is the final word. Look at your comprehensive coverage and your deductible, or call your carrier.

A chip repair that costs less than your deductible only makes sense as a claim if your insurer waives the deductible for repairs. Many do, which is why the claim is often free. If yours does not, paying the repair yourself is the simpler choice.

We handle the paperwork at no cost and work with major insurance providers, so you do not have to chase a claim number. See our insurance claims page or our chip repair with insurance page for how it works. California also bars insurers from requiring you to use a specific repair business, so you can choose who does the work.

Mobile service, Teslas and cars with driver-assist cameras

Most modern windshields hold more than glass. A camera behind the mirror may run lane-keeping, automatic braking or adaptive cruise. After a replacement, that camera has to be recalibrated so it reads the road correctly. Calibration is a separate cost on top of the glass and labor. Our pages on ADAS calibration cost in California and why calibration matters after replacement cover it in detail.

This is where an early chip repair pays off most. A repair does not require pulling the glass, so the camera stays as it is. For Tesla and other EV owners, whose cars lean heavily on camera sensors, that is a real saving.

Our technicians are certified and trained for general auto glass work and for Tesla and ADAS procedures. If the damage is too large for a repair, we can replace the glass and calibrate on site in the same visit. For the Tesla side, see our services page.

Our perspective on chip repair pricing

We see the same pattern every week. A driver notices a small chip, decides it can wait, and calls us a month later about a crack that runs across the glass. The chip would have cost $125 to repair, or nothing with the right coverage. The crack means a replacement and, on many cars, camera calibration.

Our advice is to treat any chip as a deadline, not a cosmetic flaw. We come to your home or workplace, so there is no reason to postpone it for a free afternoon.

We use OEM-equivalent glass for replacements and stand behind our work with a lifetime warranty. We also offer a price-match guarantee against written competitor quotes. When you compare quotes, compare what is included: the glass, the labor, the calibration and any travel fee.

FAQ

How much does it cost to fix a chip in a windshield?

Nationally, expect about $50 to $150, with AAA putting chip repair at $60 to $100 and crack repair at $100 to $150. Our chip and crack repair is $125. Insurance may bring your cost down to $0 depending on your policy.

Will my insurance cover a windshield chip repair?

Often, yes. Several major insurers say they reduce or waive the deductible for repairs when comprehensive or glass coverage applies. Replacements usually carry your regular deductible. Check your policy, or let us handle the claim steps.

How much does windshield crack repair cost?

AAA lists crack repair at $100 to $150. Cracks under about 14 inches can be repairable by industry standards, though many insurers set a lower limit such as a dollar bill’s length, and cracks that reach the edge usually need replacement. Send us a photo for a quick answer.

Can a chip be repaired after it has spread?

Sometimes. If it is still within the repairable size limits, not at the edge and not contaminated, a repair can stop it growing. Once it becomes a long crack or reaches the edge, replacement is the safer choice.

How long does a chip repair take?

Our mobile chip repair takes around 20 minutes at your location. You can usually drive right away.
