A hail-damaged windshield is usually one of three things: a few small chips that can be repaired, a crack that often means replacement, or a web of impact marks that definitely means replacement. Which one you have depends on where the stones hit, how deep the damage goes and whether it sits in the driver’s view. Comprehensive insurance may help pay for it, and a mobile technician can handle the work in your driveway. Here is how to tell what you have and what to do next.

TL;DR

  • Hail can chip or crack a windshield. Damage does not always match the size of the hailstone, so inspect the whole pane, not just the obvious spot.
  • Small, isolated chips can often be repaired. Cracks, damage in the driver’s line of sight and many impact points usually call for replacement.
  • Comprehensive coverage may help pay for hail damage to a windshield, and hail is treated as an act of nature rather than an at-fault accident.
  • If your car has a forward-facing camera (every Tesla does, and many other newer cars do), the camera needs calibration after a windshield replacement.
  • Our mobile service comes to your home or workplace in Walnut Creek, Oakley and the surrounding East Bay.

Can hail really damage a windshield?

Yes. Hail can leave chips, bullseyes, star breaks and full cracks in the glass. The size of the stone is not a reliable predictor. As one auto repair shop’s overview of hail repair points out, severity does not always track hailstone size, because a small stone striking at the right angle and speed can still crack glass. We are not linking that page here because it comes from a body shop, but the point matches what we see on jobs: a pea-sized stone can do more harm than a bigger one that lands flat.

Windshields are laminated: two layers of glass with a plastic layer between them. That construction is why a hailstone usually leaves a chip or crack rather than a hole. It is also why the damage can spread. A chip is a small break in the outer layer. Temperature swings, road vibration and even a slammed door can push it outward into a crack.

What hail damage looks like

After a storm, look for:

  • Bullseyes: a circular dark ring with a center point.
  • Star breaks: short cracks radiating from an impact point.
  • Combination breaks: a bullseye with legs running out of it.
  • Long cracks: a line running from an impact point toward the edge of the glass.
  • Pits: tiny surface marks that may catch a fingernail but do not go deep.

Check the glass from outside in bright, angled light, then from inside. Hail rarely hits just once, so scan the entire windshield, the rear glass and the side windows. Your hood, roof and trim are worth a look too, since dents there are part of the same claim.

How to assess the damage yourself

You do not need tools for a first pass. Do this on a dry day, with the car parked in shade so glare does not hide small marks.

  1. Count the impact points. One or two chips is a very different job from a dozen.
  2. Note where they are. Damage in the driver’s direct line of sight is the most serious, because even a good repair can leave slight distortion there.
  3. Note the size. A chip smaller than a coin is a common repair candidate. Cracks are harder to call.
  4. Check for cracks starting at the edge. Edge damage weakens the glass, and cracks that start near the border tend to spread.
  5. Run a fingernail or pen over the mark. One manufacturer’s windshield diagnostic guide describes running a ballpoint pen along a crack: if the tip catches, the crack started at an impact point rather than being a stress crack from the factory or from body flex. After a hailstorm that tells you the cause was the impact, which matters for your claim.
  6. Photograph everything. Take wide shots of the car and close-ups of each mark, with the date. You will want them for the insurer.

Not every crack after a storm is hail-related. Cracks that start at the edge with no visible impact can come from stress. If that sounds like yours, our guide to a stress crack in your windshield explains the causes.

Is it safe to drive with a hail-damaged windshield?

It depends on the damage, and the safest answer is to get it looked at quickly. The windshield does more than keep wind out. It supports the roof and gives the passenger airbag something to push against, so a compromised pane is not just a visibility problem. A crack or cluster of chips in your line of sight can also make it hard to see, especially at night or into low sun.

In the meantime, a few sensible habits:

  • Avoid slamming doors and driving over rough roads, which can push a chip into a crack.
  • Keep the defroster and AC from blasting hard at the glass. Rapid temperature change stresses damaged areas.
  • If the crack is growing, runs across your view or you cannot see clearly, do not drive. Have the car serviced where it is parked.

That last point is where mobile service helps: you do not have to drive a damaged windshield to a shop.

Repair or replace: how to decide

The general rule most technicians follow is simple. Small, shallow, isolated damage can be repaired. Large, deep, clustered or edge damage needs replacement. In practice, the call comes down to these factors:

Factor Usually repairable Usually needs replacement
Number of impacts One to a few isolated chips Many impacts across the glass
Type of break Bullseye, small star break Long cracks, deep combination breaks
Location Away from the driver’s view and edges In the driver’s line of sight or at the edge
Depth Outer layer only Through the outer layer or into the inner layer
Contamination Clean, recent chip Dirt and moisture deep in an old break

Repair works by injecting resin into the break, which restores strength and keeps the damage from spreading. It takes a short visit, and our chip and crack repair is listed at $125 per repair. If the glass is badly damaged, replacement is the better call. We cover the full decision in our guide to when you can repair a crack and when you need to replace, and the quick version is on our repair vs. replacement page.

Act fast on chips. A clean, fresh chip repairs better than one that has collected dirt and moisture for weeks.

Why not fix it yourself?

DIY resin kits exist, and for a single tiny chip they are tempting. After hail, though, you are rarely dealing with one chip, and a poor repair can leave a visible blemish or trap contamination that makes later professional repair harder. We compare both routes in chip repair: DIY vs. professional. AAA makes a similar point about hail damage generally: certified technicians have the tools and expertise to avoid causing extra damage and may guarantee their work.

Does insurance cover a hail-damaged windshield?

Often, yes, if you carry the right coverage. Hail damage falls under comprehensive coverage, not collision. The Oklahoma Insurance Department, whose state sees plenty of hail, notes that comprehensive may help pay to repair body, windshield and interior damage from hail, while liability-only coverage may not cover a hail claim. AAA describes it the same way: comprehensive covers hail as damage caused by an act of nature.

Deductibles

Comprehensive coverage usually carries a deductible. The Insurance Information Institute says it is typically $100 to $300, and policyholders can often adjust it to influence premiums. Your own policy sets the real number, and some policies treat glass differently from the rest of the car, so check your declarations page or call your insurer. Many of our customers pay little or nothing out of pocket once insurance is applied, but that depends on your policy.

Will a hail claim raise your rates?

AAA’s guidance is that a hail claim will not lead the insurer to raise your rates, since hail is an act of nature. Practices vary by company and state, so confirm with your carrier if you are unsure.

Filing the claim

In general, the steps run like this: photograph the damage, contact your insurer, get your claim number, and schedule the work. We handle the insurance paperwork at no cost to you and work with major insurance providers. If you want the full walkthrough, see our guides on filing an insurance claim for windshield replacement and filing a windshield claim in California. You can also read how windshield replacement through insurance works with us.

Four steps for filing a windshield hail claim

If your car also has dents in the roof or hood, mention them when you file. A single hail event is generally one claim, so it is worth documenting all the damage at once.

Hail damage on a Tesla or a car with driver-assist cameras

Most newer vehicles have a camera mounted behind the windshield that feeds lane-keeping, emergency braking and similar features. Replace the glass and the camera’s position relative to the road can shift slightly, so it has to be recalibrated.

Tesla’s service documentation says that when replacing the windshield moves the camera from its original position, you should clear the camera calibration data on the touchscreen and run the applicable calibration procedure. That manual is for the 2015 to 2020 Model X, and procedures vary by model and year. Tesla’s owner’s manual also stresses that calibration is a critical safety step, and that Autopilot and other safety features may stay unavailable until the car completes its self-calibration drive.

The takeaway: after a hail-related replacement, ask whoever does the work how they handle camera calibration. Our technicians are certified and trained for both general auto glass work and Tesla and ADAS calibration, and we perform it on site. See our pages on Tesla windshield replacement in the East Bay and ADAS recalibration.

Perspective: what we see after a hail storm

Most people call us after a storm asking one question: can this be fixed, or is it a new windshield? We tell them to look at the number of impacts and where they sit. A couple of clean chips outside the driver’s view are exactly what repair is for. A cluster of breaks or a crack running toward the edge is a replacement.

Where we think the standard shop experience falls short is the logistics. Hail damage is usually widespread, the car is hard to drive comfortably, and nobody wants to sit in a waiting room. So we come to your home or workplace, handle the insurance claim paperwork at no cost, and use OEM-equivalent glass. Our work carries a lifetime warranty on materials and labor, and we match written competitor quotes.

For Tesla and other driver-assist vehicles, we do the camera calibration as part of the job rather than sending you elsewhere. A windshield that fits but leaves safety features offline is not a finished repair.

How to protect a windshield from hail

You cannot stop a storm, but you can reduce exposure. AAA says the best protection is to park in a garage or under a carport. If you have neither, its other suggestions are a hail cover, thick blankets or towels, or rubber floor mats placed rubber-side up on the windshield.

Progressive also suggests staying informed about weather forecasts and signing up for emergency alerts so you can move your car or cover it before the storm arrives. If a storm is coming and you are away from home, a parking structure at work or a store is a better bet than a street spot.

Hail is less frequent in the East Bay than in the Plains states, but a freak storm, and the regular rocks flung up on highways like I-680 and Highway 4, can cause the same kind of chip. Fixing chips early is the best defense against both.

Get it fixed where you park

If your windshield took hail, we can assess it at your home or workplace in Walnut Creek, Oakley and across the East Bay, repair what can be repaired and replace what cannot. Chip and crack repair is $125 per repair. Replacement pricing depends on your vehicle and glass type, and we can work with your insurer directly.

FAQ

Can hail crack a windshield?

Yes. Hail can cause chips or cracks depending on the size of the stone, its speed and the angle of impact. Smaller stones can still cause damage, so inspect the whole windshield after any storm.

Does claiming hail damage make insurance go up?

AAA’s guidance says a hail claim should not lead the insurer to raise your rates because hail is an act of nature. Policies and state rules differ, so confirm with your carrier before you file.

Does full coverage cover hail damage?

Usually, if “full coverage” includes comprehensive, which is what pays for hail. Liability-only policies may not cover hail damage. Your deductible applies, and the Insurance Information Institute puts typical comprehensive deductibles at $100 to $300.

Can a hail-damaged windshield be repaired?

Sometimes. A few small, isolated chips away from your line of sight are often repairable. Long cracks, edge damage and many impact points generally mean replacement. A technician can tell you after looking at the glass in person.

Do I need ADAS calibration after replacing a hail-damaged windshield?

If your vehicle has a windshield-mounted camera, yes, it will generally need calibration after replacement. Tesla’s documentation treats it as a required step. We perform it on site for all makes and models, including Tesla.
