California Tint Law in 30 Seconds
Windshield: only non-reflective tint above the AS-1 line. Front side windows: must allow more than 70% of light in (VLT). Rear side windows and rear window: any darkness allowed. Reflectivity: no more than 35% for all windows. Medical exemptions available. Violation: fix-it ticket $25 base fine, up to $197 total with fees.
California VLT Requirements by Window
| Window | Legal VLT | Darkness | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windshield | Non-reflective only, above AS-1 line | Top 4–5 inches only | No tint below AS-1 line regardless of darkness |
| Front driver window | > 70% VLT | Very light (factory-tinted glass qualifies) | Most critical — officers test this window first |
| Front passenger window | > 70% VLT | Very light | Same rule as driver side |
| Rear side windows | Any darkness | 5%, 15%, 35%+ all legal | No restriction — popular for privacy and heat rejection |
| Rear window | Any darkness | 5%, 15%, 35%+ all legal | Must have dual side mirrors if rear window is tinted on a non-SUV/truck |
VLT = Visible Light Transmission. Higher % = lighter tint. 70% VLT means 70% of light passes through. Source: California Vehicle Code §26708.
What Does 70% VLT Look Like?
Reflectivity Rules
- Front side windows: tint must not be more than 35% reflective
- Rear side windows: tint must not be more than 35% reflective
- Red and amber tint colors are prohibited on all windows
- Metallic or mirrored tint is typically prohibited — check your specific film's reflectivity rating
Fix-It Ticket Fines (2026)
| Fine Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Base fine (VC §26708) | $25 |
| State/county penalty assessments | ~$100–$150 |
| Court facility fee | ~$35–$50 |
| Total estimated | $160–$197 |
| If corrected and dismissed (proof of correction) | $0 (fix-it ticket) |
A tint violation is a correctable "fix-it ticket" (CVC §40610). Remove the non-compliant tint, get a signed correction from a law enforcement officer, and the fine is waived.
Medical Exemption
California allows darker front window tint with a medical exemption
Under CVC §26708.2, drivers with conditions like lupus, porphyria, melanoma, photophobia, or severe sun sensitivity can apply for an exemption to install darker tint on front windows.
- How to apply: Obtain a signed letter from your physician or optometrist specifying the medical need
- Keep in vehicle: The exemption must be in the vehicle at all times
- No government form required: A doctor's letter on letterhead is sufficient
- Darkest allowed: Still cannot use opaque or mirrored film
FasTrak & GPS Compatibility
Ceramic and carbon tints are FasTrak compatible. They do not contain metal and do not block radio-frequency signals. Standard metallic tint CAN interfere with FasTrak transponders, GPS, and satellite radio. Auto Renu installs only ceramic and carbon films — both California-legal and electronically transparent.
Common Tint Violations in California
Any tint on front side windows
Even a legal-looking light tint can fail if it drops below 70% VLT. Most car tint sold at auto parts stores is 35% — illegal on front windows in California.
Tint that extends below the AS-1 line on the windshield
The AS-1 line is typically 4–5 inches from the top of the windshield. Any tint below this line is illegal regardless of darkness.
Reflective or metallic tint on any window
If your tint has a mirror-like appearance, it likely exceeds the 35% reflectivity limit and is illegal regardless of which window it's on.
Colored tint (red, amber, yellow)
Only neutral gray, green, or charcoal tints are legal in California. Red and amber are prohibited on all windows.
