Most people know you can tint car side windows, but many do not realize the windshield itself can also be tinted — within strict California limits. Done correctly, a legal windshield film dramatically reduces glare and sun fatigue, especially on east-west commutes on I-680 and Highway 4. Here is what is legal and what actually works.
California Vehicle Code Section 26708 allows tinting on the windshield ONLY in the top portion — above the AS-1 line (the line where the windshield begins to curve, typically 4–6 inches from the top). This is called the "top strip" or "visor strip." The strip must be non-reflective. No VLT minimum applies to the top strip. The rest of the windshield must remain untinted (70%+ VLT required by manufacturer design). Note: The front side windows (driver and passenger) must allow 70%+ VLT through — most factory glass is already near this level.
A ceramic or carbon film strip across the top 4–6 inches of the windshield: blocks 99% of UV radiation entering through the top (reduces sun damage to dashboard and interior), rejects 85–97% of infrared heat from the morning sun on east-facing roads, reduces glare from low sun angle (especially the I-680 northbound morning commute and Highway 4 westbound evening commute), and does not interfere with rain sensors or cameras mounted in the upper center area (films are cut to leave sensor areas clear).
Full windshield tinting (below the AS-1 line) is illegal in California. Any film below that line must be clear (anti-UV, anti-scratch coatings only). The top strip is the only legal windshield tinting option. Many drivers also add a clear paint protection film (PPF) or clear UV-blocking film to the lower portion of the windshield to protect against rock chips — this is legal because it is optically clear.
