California has some of the strictest window tint laws in the country. Get it wrong and you face a fix-it ticket, mandatory tint removal, and a re-inspection fee. Get it right and you enjoy heat rejection, UV protection, and privacy without any legal risk. This guide covers every California tint law that applies to passenger vehicles, trucks, and SUVs in 2026 — including what VLT means, what is and is not legal on each window, and how Auto Renu ensures every installation is CA-legal.
Windshield: only the top 4 inches (AS-1 line) may be tinted. No darkness restriction in that zone, but the tint must be non-reflective. The rest of the windshield: clear only. Front side windows (driver and passenger): must allow more than 70% of light in (VLT above 70%). Aftermarket tint is effectively not legal on front side windows in California unless you have a medical exemption. Rear side windows (behind the driver): any darkness allowed. No VLT restriction for sedans, SUVs, trucks, or vans. Rear window: any darkness allowed. If the rear window is tinted darker than 70% VLT, California law requires dual side mirrors (most vehicles already have these).
VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission — the percentage of light that passes through the glass and film combined. A 70% VLT means 70% of visible light passes through; 30% is blocked. Important: VLT is measured through both the glass AND the film together. Standard car glass is typically 75–80% VLT. Adding a 70% VLT film to 75% VLT glass results in a combined VLT of approximately 52% — which is below California's legal requirement for front side windows. This is why any film at all on front side windows in California is generally not legal. Auto Renu never installs front side window tint that would result in a combined VLT below 70%.
Technically yes — but practically, barely. The 70% combined VLT requirement means the film itself must be nearly clear. The lightest common tint films (80–90% VLT film) combined with standard auto glass (75–80% VLT) result in combined values of 60–72%. A film that achieves true legal compliance on California front side windows is nearly invisible and provides minimal heat rejection. Most legitimate tint shops in California simply do not tint front side windows without a medical exemption — and Auto Renu follows this standard. If a shop offers you "legal front tint" with visible darkness, verify the VLT math before accepting.
California Vehicle Code Section 26708.2 allows a medical exemption for darker front window tinting if a licensed physician certifies that the driver has a medical condition requiring protection from sunlight — such as lupus, melanoma, porphyria, or severe photosensitivity. The exemption must be carried in the vehicle and presented to law enforcement if asked. The exemption applies only to the vehicle and driver specified. It does not cover any level of darkness — the film must still provide sufficient visibility for safe driving. Auto Renu can install any legally-compliant tint level specified in a valid medical exemption certificate.
Getting caught with illegal tint in California results in a fix-it ticket under CVC 26708. The fix-it ticket requires: removal of the illegal tint. A signed certificate of correction from a law enforcement officer or licensed shop. Payment of a $25 correction fee plus court costs (total typically $100–$250). If you fail to fix the violation, penalties escalate and the ticket becomes a fine. Beyond the fine: you must pay to have the illegal tint removed and legally compliant tint re-installed.
