After a windshield replacement on any vehicle with a forward-facing camera, ADAS calibration is required. But "calibration" is not one thing — there are three fundamentally different procedures depending on your vehicle. Most auto glass shops can only do one type. The forward-facing camera is mounted to a bracket bonded directly to the windshield. When the glass is replaced, the camera's position relative to the road changes by a fraction of a degree. That fraction of a degree is enough to cause lane-keep assist to pull the wheel incorrectly, automatic emergency braking to trigger late, or adaptive cruise control to follow too closely. Calibration restores the camera to factory-spec alignment.
Static calibration uses a calibration target — a large board with a specific pattern — placed at a precise distance and height in front of the vehicle. The technician connects to the vehicle's OBD-II system and runs the calibration procedure using dealer-level scan tools. Static calibration takes 30–60 minutes and requires a level, open indoor or outdoor space. Required for: most Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and many Stellantis (Jeep, Ram, Chrysler) vehicles.
Dynamic calibration requires driving the vehicle at highway speeds (typically 30–80 mph) for 25–50 miles on clearly marked roads. The camera "learns" its correct position by reading lane lines, guard rails, and road features. Dynamic calibration takes 30–45 minutes of highway driving. A technician drives the vehicle. Required for: Tesla (all models), most Honda/Acura, many Toyota/Lexus, Ford, and GM vehicles.
Some vehicles require both static target setup AND a dynamic drive. The static procedure initializes the camera and the dynamic drive finalizes calibration. Required for: Subaru EyeSight systems (all models), some Hyundai/Kia, newer Ford Bronco and F-150 with ADAS packages. This is the most time-intensive — 60–90 minutes total — but Auto Renu handles it in a single appointment at your location.
