ADAS Calibration After Windshield Replacement — The Complete Guide
By Auto Renu Auto Glass LLC · Updated June 2026 · 7-min read
Quick Answer: Do I Need ADAS Calibration?
If your vehicle has a forward-facing camera mounted to the windshield (most vehicles made after 2015 do), yes — ADAS calibration is required after every windshield replacement. Skipping it can cause lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control to malfunction or give false warnings. Auto Renu includes calibration with every eligible replacement at no extra charge.
What Is ADAS?
ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — the suite of safety technologies that help prevent accidents by monitoring your vehicle's surroundings and alerting or intervening when needed.
Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)
Detects vehicles and pedestrians ahead and brakes automatically if a collision is imminent.
Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
Alerts you when your vehicle drifts out of a lane without signaling.
Lane Keep Assist (LKA)
Actively steers the vehicle back into the lane when drifting is detected.
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
Maintains a set speed and following distance, braking and accelerating automatically.
Traffic Sign Recognition
Reads speed limits and other signs and displays them on your dashboard.
Driver Attention Monitor
Detects inattention or drowsiness and alerts the driver.
Why Windshield Replacement Requires Recalibration
The forward-facing camera that powers most ADAS features is mounted directly to the windshield (typically top-center). When the windshield is removed and reinstalled:
- The camera is physically displaced — even 1mm of misalignment changes where the camera "thinks" the horizon is
- New glass has slightly different optical properties than the original — even OEM glass has marginal variation that affects camera image quality
- The camera bracket must be reattached, and factory torque specs rarely result in pixel-perfect repositioning
- Most manufacturers require a calibration scan after any glass removal — it's in the factory service procedure
Static vs Dynamic Calibration
Static Calibration
Performed in a controlled indoor environment using a calibration target board placed at a specific distance and angle in front of the vehicle.
- Vehicle must be stationary on a level surface
- Requires specialized OEM or aftermarket calibration tool
- Results stored in vehicle ECU
- Required for: BMW, Audi, some Mercedes, some Honda
Dynamic Calibration
The vehicle is driven at highway speeds while the camera self-calibrates using real-world lane markings and other reference points.
- Requires a 15–30 minute calibration drive
- No fixed targets — performed on open highway
- Auto Renu technician drives during calibration
- Required for: Tesla, Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, most GM

What Happens If You Skip Calibration?
- Lane departure warning may not trigger — or may trigger constantly for no reason
- Automatic emergency braking may activate unexpectedly at highway speeds
- Adaptive cruise control may not maintain safe following distance
- Tesla Autopilot and Full Self-Driving will be disabled until calibration is complete
- Insurance may dispute claims if an ADAS system failed due to known uncalibrated state
- NHTSA investigations have linked uncalibrated cameras to crashes
